This is a painting with tiny fragments of iridescent and printed fabrics collaged into it and layered with texture, metallic threads and beads. The background is also encrusted with beads which add a glow of red in different lights.
This painting was inspired partly by the medium – I thought butterflies would look good using my textile art approach with threads and beads and shimmer; and partly because this particular species of butterfly were my favourite in the Ilfracombe Museum when I went there on a school trip.
It’s a Victorian Museum and had hardly changed at that time, with drawer upon drawer of all manner of insects and cupboards with bats pickled in jars! It was a bit like a scary lucky dip, as you were never sure if it would be a drawer full of gorgeous butterflies, or a drawer full of spiders and beetles you would open next! I just thought these butterflies were amazing! I just couldn’t believe the colour, how could they seem to ‘glow’, they just blew me away.
Of course the postcard I bought didn’t do them justice, but I kept it all those years and used it in a project at Uni, revisiting it now with new ideas springing from where I left off.
