‘Tree at Spanish Left’ is a painting of a section of a Palm Tree again from the collection of photos I took on holiday in Tenerife. I am rather obsessed with taking photographs of textures and colours in nature and have a huge number of tree bark sections which I have produced numerous collages and paintings from. This was the first I painted on canvas, as my previous work was on paper and framed. The attention is on the colour and texture of the tree, which I have rendered as a series of intricate marks and patterns. The background was painted with freeform dribbles of paint from the reverse way up; great fun!

‘Rocks at Spanish Left’ is a large 1m x 1m mixed media commission I created which was how I developed the bead and thread technique. A woman had already bought several of my other paintings and asked me if I could make her a really dramatic large canvas for the centre piece in her living room. She liked my natural style work and textural collages but wasn’t quite sure of exactly what she wanted. All she said was under-watery / sea and that she liked the rocks theme of some the work she had already bought from me.
I asked her to give me some objects or items that represented the things she liked; meanwhile I looked through my photos from various holidays which are what I had used to inspire the previous work. She gave me a glittery, beaded bumblebee, some scraps of shiny green and blue ribbon and sequins, and I found a picture of strange bubbly seaweed draped around the rocks at Spanish left in Tenerife (a surf break).
I had heaps of beads left over from when I made jewellery whilst at University and the seaweed just looked like it had hundreds of beads attached – so I began to experiment and the textile –like bejewelled style developed from there!
This piece is heavily textured, painted and then encrusted with a huge amount of threads and beads all blended together in colour and size to create this mass of swirling forms.
